Yes, the RenderTexture node is to be used like a normal Texture2 node so it can display a texture on a 3D model by putting a reference to this node in the Material2 node's DiffuseTexture field.

But the RenderTexture does not use a texture file. Instead the texture is rendered from a Viewport. Whatever the viewport sees will be what the texture looks like. You need to put a reference of the RenderTexture node in a new Viewport node's Target field.

 The TVChannelSwitcher prototype uses the RenderTexture node within it. There you can specify Shape nodes that are like TVscreens and you can specify Camera frames and by clicking repeatedly on the Shapes (TVs) you will see the different Cameras.
